We are proud to be one of New Jersey’s oldest midwifery practices lead by one of the most experienced midwives in the nation.
For over three decades, The Childbirth Center was one of New Jersey’s leading free-standing birth and women’s healthcare centers where thousands of women came for normal childbirth with a certified nurse-midwife and kept coming back for all of their care.
The freestanding Childbirth Center closed in 2003 and Lonnie and her team embarked on a journey to find the right combination of facility and women’s healthcare providers to continue to deliver the respectful, highly personalized care of a midwife that made the center so sought after for many years. We did, and are still having our unmatched success attending amazing births with incredible families. As leaders in the field of normalized birth and midwifery models of care within the healthcare system, The Childbirth and Women’s Wellness Team is here to support you as you find the perfect balance for your birth experience.
For years “The Center” and it’s founder, Lonnie Morris have been a vocal proponents for women in Northern New Jersey.
Lonnie’s memorable personality and direct approach has made her a popular voice in the struggle to naturalize birth in organized medicine. She and her allies have had their share of challenges and sometimes stand-offs with organized medicine to stay true to their convictions and made great strides in changing the state laws empowering positive change for women.
In recent years, Lonnie and her fellow ACNM members have lobbied, picketed, and done whatever was called for to advance the midwifery mission within the New Jersey State Legislature.
She and her colleagues have made great strides in changing attitudes within organized medicine toward birth, midwives and the rights of women. The following video segments were edited from a tribute video made by The American College of Nurse Midwives when Dr. Lonnie Morris was made a Fellow in this prestigious organization. As a past president of the NJ Affiliate of The American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) and an active voice in the women’s healthcare debate, Lonnie Morris remains firm in her commitment to speak up and make a difference.
They have invested countless hours working within the system to open doors and gain ground for women in the state of New Jersey and subsequently the US. Initiatives and referendums are not just fancy political jargon to many midwives, but active pursuits needed to reclaim a women’s right to a healthy, natural birth free of unwarranted medical intervention.
Many women consider natural childbirth to be empowering.
A woman who is supported through labor, as she instinctively wants to birth, is a woman who will likely feel positive about her birth experience and future parenting skills. Her baby is more alert and placed on her skin (promoting maternal bonding) and breastfeeding is more likely to be enjoyable and successful.
Proponents of natural childbirth note that anesthetics can increase the likelihood of complications.
Labor may be slowed and the naturally occurring hormones of birth are not passed on to the baby. We stay with our clients and give them the time and attention they need to have a healthy and natural labor and birth.
We provide comprehensive prenatal care, physical examinations, and help you prepare for labor, delivery and early parenthood in the warm, relaxed, and supportive atmosphere.
